Evicted Mirvish Village, Toronto, Canada

Mirvish Village was an iconic Toronto neighbourhood. Created by entrepreneur Edwin “Honest Ed” Mirvish, it all started in 1948 with a single discount retail store and grew into a strange and wonderful little empire. Mirvish Village is best remembered for Honest Ed’s, a huge illuminated spectacle of a building, but it was also home to many small restaurants, galleries and shops that were only able to thrive under the subsidized care of Mr. Mirvish, who recognized that culture and character need to be nurtured, not shelled out to the highest bidder. Sadly that is all in the past. Mirvish Village is undergoing a huge redevelopment into, in true Toronto fashion, condos.
