In 1524 Granada was colonized by the Spanish, becoming the first European city on the American mainland. During the colonial period Granada's economy flourished. European settlers rebuilt the city center with colonial-style housing that, to this day, still composes most of the center. The houses combine Spanish colonialist architecture with local influence: high ceilings to disperse the heat, sugar cane thatchwork for the ceiling, and bold colours. These days the properties are mostly owned by foreigners and expats and, as tourism grows, they become even more sought out and valuable. It is a rare treat to stumble upon one that is so raw and untouched.
